Ask ten ISP engineers which router vendor to standardise on and you will start a small religious war. The argument is usually framed as if one of these three platforms must be objectively best. It is the wrong frame. MikroTik, Cisco and Juniper are all engineered by serious people who know how packets move; they simply aim at different points on the curve that runs from low cost and high flexibility at one end to massive forwarding capacity and contractual support at the other. Juniper: clean operations at carrier scale

Juniper has a long, well-earned reputation in service-provider cores and edges. Its operating system, Junos, is widely admired for consistency and for a commit-based configuration model — you stage changes, review the diff, commit atomically, and roll back cleanly if something looks wrong. For engineers who have been burned by half-applied changes on a core router, that workflow alone is a selling point. Juniper tends to be chosen for high-capacity routing where stability under sustained load and a large routing state matter more than sticker price.

Like Cisco, Juniper sits at the higher end of cost and assumes carrier-grade requirements. The certified-engineer pool is smaller than Cisco's though still healthy, and the platform genuinely rewards teams operating at scale. It is a poor fit for a tiny edge site where a sub-hundred-dollar box would do the same job; it is an excellent fit where the blast radius of a single device is enormous.

The hidden costs that do not appear on the quote

The sticker price of a router is the part of the cost that is easiest to compare and least likely to dominate the real total.
